The original Chinese article can be found here.

Today, a small African country and probably one of the poorest countries on earth – Kenya – declared a national holiday to celebrate the election of a new president in a faraway nation that is also undoubtedly the most powerful and wealthiest country on earth – the United States of America. This sounds familiar, but don't misunderstand – this is not like Hong Kong, Australia or other former British colonies celebrating the birthday of the queen or her accession to the throne. This is entirely voluntary. It is not obsequious but proud, because the new president of the strongest country has family that came from a Kenyan village and possibly some who were illegal immigrants.

In the twenty-four hours since Obama was elected president of the US, I followed news reports from around the world, and they have surprised and moved me. In Japan, where the US still stations troops (and some Japanese maintain they are still "occupied" by the US army), large scale celebratory activities appeared and Americans were so surprised as if the sun rose from the West. In Germany, the people were emotionally excited; when the media held a mock election, Germans "voted" for Obama. In Hong Kong, native residents celebrated with American citizens. In Australia, those of white and brown skin – none with the right to vote in the US – cried tears of joy. In South Asia, especially in Pakistan and Afghanistan, where people's skin looks more or less like Obama's, people were pleased with themselves. Of course, people all over Africa and Southeast Asia congratulated each other.

These circumstances have never been seen before by the US media, and one media outlet even proudly said that Obama is "president of the world." President of the world is a bit of an exaggeration, but when one country chooses a president and unexpectedly excites the world like this, naturally it was the first time since the country's founding that this has occurred in the US. Although the day he was elected, I had already written an article analyzing the historical significance of Obama's election, I did not imagine that there would be such a great reaction around the world. It is almost certain that the day Obama was elected was the day that the people of the US and the world cried the most tears.

Therefore, when I wrote my thinking was chaotic, and I racked my brain to write: …America today is indirectly more poisonous than Sanlu milk powder. The US faces two wars that can't be won but from which troops cannot be withdrawn and the most serious economic crisis and financial tsunami in world history. Internationally, America is like a rat crossing the street – hated by everyone – tossing about in the river of her international position. It is said that just at the critical moment when America is about to be replaced by a "rising China," a strange gesture occurred, the promotion of a black president, Obama. This gesture was just like the endless might of powerful kungfu moves, instantly eliminating any type of offense and making crisis invisible….

Therefore, withdrawing or not withdrawing from Iraq is not a problem. Iraq will probably ask the US to stay, because Americans want to expand the idea of democracy and freedom, right? Just what you wished for. A black slave's child also can become president, what country's people will not welcome this? Bin Laden is the most hurt because one of the most powerful things he uses to attract terrorists to work against the US was that he wanted to destroy the Western world, which is controlled by white men. Now he is crying dejectedly alone in his cave, possible dying before he sees daylight because now the person who sits atop the highest throne of Western power has much darker skin than he does. In the US's economic crisis, what do those in power fear the most? Is it that the crisis explodes to a point where the poorest people (mostly blacks) begin to become unstable, begin to cause a disturbance, disrupt social harmony? Under a black man's leadership, isn't a disturbance instigated by African-Americans a lot less likely? And the new rising country that wants to replace the US, look at all of those minorities who were expelled from the country and have to live in all corners of the world. Again, look at lower class Chinese people who are made to live in misery because of corrupt officials. Even if all of America's money were given to you, there is no way for you to talk about "replacing" the US.

Even China's angry youth are silent. They can only blame things on others: why didn't my mother give birth to me in the US? If she had, I could become the American president, destroying America in the end, taking revenge for China! Hence, I will write something new for my friend's company who specializes in advertisements for immigrants and students in the US: Quickly, immigrants, give birth in the US, then in 47 years your children will have the opportunity to become the first Chinese-American president!

Americans, so cunning! Right now, electing an African-American president is actually very wise. Exactly when the whole world, including its closest allies in Europe had grave doubts and were not satisfied, Americans unexpectedly choose a black president who on the first day unites all of world's countries and peoples.

But Obama is not president of the world. From now on, he will lead the American people in facing the economic crisis, will continue to promote American products and ideas on the world's stage and will continue to negotiate with different countries over every little detail, even taking advantage of US power to bully others. We cannot expect him to actually treat China as well as he treats the US, as this is idiotic nonsense. Obama is president of the US, not president of the world and not president of China.

Yet the entire world is acting as stupid and drunk as this. In their hearts Americans understand – Obama is not the world's president, he is their president. However, they also understand, tonight, when he was chosen as president by America, he was the world's Obama!

Then what were people from all corners of the globe cheering? What moved them? Was it that America again wants to show off its strength? Was it that the American economy was rescued? Was it that America wants to pull its troops out of Iraq? Was it that a black president wants to take America's money to Africa to save its economy? Was it that Obama wants to be friendly towards Asia?

It wasn't any of these things. Those people of all different skin colors, who do not have any connections to the US, were cheering and jumping for joy for only one reason: the reason and significance behind Obama's election. This is a belief, deeply rooted in America but still doubted by many countries, a belief that is dismissed or even attacked – a core value system! Obama's victory is a victory for America's core values. As president, Obama will probably disappoint people, but what his victory makes clear is that this type of core value system will continue to guide America as it forges ahead along the path of human righteousness and excite the people of the world, advancing together in the right direction.

What belief is this powerful? Could it be stronger than America's weapons and bombs, stronger than America's skyscrapers and the US dollar?

Look at one sentence from Obama's victory speech: tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity, and unyielding hope.

Yes, at this time, with the whole world's eyes on "the world's Obama," he says a sentence like this. He hails the foundation of America and Americans' core values. Obviously, as a great people, as a country that wants to rise, one needs to have something more powerful than weapons and wealth, a core values system that can draw a people towards a bright future. Then one can overcome difficulty after difficulty, then one can with great fortitude move towards the future, then genuine harmony can be achieved, then one can rise!

Up until now, maybe no one would disagree with this view, China is developing economically, has some money, and the people have enthusiasm. However, we do not have a core value system, or one could say our value system is at a degree of chaos or loss. Therefore, in China, there are people everywhere who are busy trying to build a new value system. Some are searching for core values in Marxist theory, some have gone back 2000 years to Confucius to look for values, while others want to take from the speeches of central government leaders to fill in the traces of spiritual emptiness of 1.3 million people. Some people want to based on the current situation create something that advances with the times, that can at any time be used as a method for writing articles and can adapt and add to our core value system. Some people…
